HOTEL MARKET

Comte Borrell 68, Barcelona.
Located opposite the iconic San Antoni market, the first covered market in Barcelona to be built outside the old city walls, the Market Hotel and Restaurant has touched a nostalgic nerve in the city’s hotel’s culture. Like the famous food market, the boutique hotel’s building is modernista (or art nouveau) in style but been given a chic, east-meets-west makeover in the hands of Lázaro Rosa-Violán, fusing period European architecture with calm-inducing oriental elements. The colonial-inspired Bar Rosso, which was installed quite recently, adds another dimension to the project, providing a hotel-restaurant-bar combination that has proved to be a winner on city’s hospitality scene.

HOTEL TRIAS

Founded in 1900, the Hotel Trias was the first hotel on the Costa Brava, one of Catalonia’s most desirable destinations. Taking inspiration from the hotel’s sea-facing the location, its makeover, carried out in 2005, is rich in Mediterranean style. Particularly in the rooms, foam-white permeates the decor, in the crisp white linen, nautical-inspired window coverings and simple furniture. Downstairs in the commons areas a warmer ambiance has been achieved using rattan chairs, stripped wood fittings and some striking wall art and textiles. All in all, a chic, modern design makeover for one of Catalonia’s most historic hotels.

HOTEL LA MALCONTENTA

Located in Catalonia’s bucolic Empordá region, the Hotel La Malcontenta was once a private masia (or country home), famous throughout the Empordá for the punctiliousness of its proprietor (to be malcontenta means to be unsatisfied). Taking this demand for detail as a base and classical Mediterranean villa architecture as inspiration, the conversion of La Malcontenta from home to upmarket rural hotel has resulted in a work where its graceful, historical character has not been sacrificed to modern design, but rather enriched by period-inspired furniture, simple textures, a palette of warm, neutral colours and an abundance of feminine touches.
